Senior intelligence officials on Tuesday condemned the activities of a now-defunct chat room that focused on transgender issues, where employees from multiple federal agencies—including the National Security Agency (NSA), the CIA, and the Defense Intelligence Agency—allegedly engaged in discussions involving controversial and sexually explicit topics during work hours, according to reports.

The revelations, first reported by Manhattan Institute senior fellow Christopher Rufo and journalist Hannah Grossman, suggest that participants used an official government messaging platform to discuss transgender medical procedures, personal sexual experiences, and various fetishes. Additionally, some chat members reportedly made derogatory comments about Italians, Christians, conservatives, and the newly appointed Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Rufo spoke to a whistleblower who claimed a strange “clique” holds key spots in the NSA.

NSA Whistleblower: About ten years ago, they started doing the “employee resource groups”: African-American, veterans, Pride. It was just a meeting here and there, almost like a potluck—culture, food, a speech. Then it started to get more and more. Instead of just one day a month, it was one week a month, or the whole month. You could be hired as a mathematician, a staff officer, or system engineer, but you would spend your time going to these events and having meetings all day about it. They got themselves into position to help craft policy and started pushing the idea that if you want to get promoted, you have to participate in these events.

And then everything became Pride. You would go to a training, and it would be about “privilege” and “how to be a better ally.” A lady would give classes on how to talk “gender-neutral” to people. You had analysts that didn’t want to do the reporting they were supposed to be doing because they were going to have to report on somebody’s “dead name.” They were having this crisis of conscience about reporting the adversary’s actual name because they thought it was their “dead name,” and they didn’t want to disrespect the person. It was like a cult that was hellbent on pushing gender ideology.

Rufo: It seems like this is a clique of very activist male-to-female transgender agents. Tell me about this community.

Whistleblower: There is a very small number of them, but they wield an enormous amount of power. And outside of the sick stuff, you also see a prevalent Marxist philosophy going on with these people in their chat rooms. They hate capitalism. They hate Christians. They’re always espousing socialist and Marxist beliefs.

I know several people at the agency brought that up, like, “Hey, we’re here to fight for the U.S.A. and go after the adversaries.” And they just got hammered. They would just start coming out with “transphobe” and “homophobe” right away or calling you a “racist.” And that’s why a lot of folks are still hesitant to say anything, because you still have people at these agencies in those key spots. It infected everything.

Following the leak of chat logs on social media, widespread criticism emerged, including remarks from President Trump’s government efficiency adviser Elon Musk, who called for a “MAJOR housecleaning” within intelligence agencies in a post on Twitter.

The NSA, which adopted its first transgender inclusion policy in 2021 under former Director Paul Nakasone, had previously emphasized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a key institutional priority. Rufo suggested that the agency’s focus on DEI policies may have facilitated the existence of the chat room. However, under the Trump administration’s leadership, DEI initiatives across federal agencies have been swiftly dismantled.

Responding to the controversy, Gabbard announced that the chat rooms had been shut down immediately and vowed to hold those involved accountable. A day later, writes NBC News, the Director of National Intelligence announced that she “fired more than 100 intelligence officers from 15 agencies for using a government chat platform for discussions that included topics like polyamory, gender transition surgery and politics.

‘I put out a directive today that they all will be terminated and their security clearances will be revoked,’ Gabbard told Fox News on Tuesday.

Gabbard said the fired intelligence officers’ conduct represented “an egregious violation of trust” and violated ‘basic rules and standards around professionalism.’”

The leaked messages, which reportedly span several years, detail explicit conversations regarding gender transition surgeries, hormone treatments, and personal experiences with medical procedures. One employee described spending thousands of dollars on laser hair removal, while another expressed satisfaction with no longer needing to “aim” while urinating after undergoing a surgical transition.

Further scrutiny arose over messages that criticized Gabbard, with some participants labeling her “anti-queer” and a “Russian agent.” Other posts included celebratory remarks about the death of televangelist Pat Robertson.

The exposure of these conversations has intensified debate over the role of DEI policies in federal agencies, particularly as the Trump administration continues efforts to eliminate such initiatives. Meanwhile, a federal court in Baltimore has partially blocked aspects of Trump’s executive order restricting DEI-related contracts and grants, signaling potential legal battles ahead.
