By As the Hunter Biden scandals, along with his father’s connection to them, continue to act as an anchor on Democratic hopes at reelection in the fall, liberal allies in the media have gone into action to do everything they can to help the president.
That includes CBS News, one of the biggest outlets in the country.
In February, The New York Post reported that “the acclaimed CBS reporter who was investigating the Hunter Biden laptop scandal before she was fired last week had her personal files seized by the network in an “unprecedented” move.”
On Thursday, Herridge got to tell her story to Congress, and she revealed the many ways that media bias operates to protect Democrats from accountability.
Catherine Herridge, a former senior investigative correspondent, will appear as a witness before a House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee hearing on press freedom issues and say that her former employer encroached on her rights, according to her opening statement, obtained by the Washington Examiner.
“CBS News’ decision to seize my reporting records crossed a red line that I believe should never be crossed by any media organization,” Herridge will say.
Herridge had a high-profile role at CBS News beginning in 2019 and, prior to that, had worked at Fox News since the 1990s. She became known for covering national security issues and, more recently, investigations into Joe Biden and Hunter Biden.
Her firing became a source of controversy after several reports indicated that CBS News “seized” her items, including confidential source information, upon her termination. Herridge plans to explain what happened to lawmakers during Thursday’s hearing.
“When I was laid off in February, an incident reinforced in my mind the importance of protecting confidential sources,” Herridge plans to say. “CBS News locked me out of the building and seized hundreds of pages of my reporting files, including confidential source information. Multiple sources said they were concerned that by working with me to expose government corruption and misconduct they would be identified and exposed.”
Herridge confirmed to Republican Ohio Representative Jim Jordan that her employment was terminated by CBS subsequent to her reporting of facts that cast negatively on the Biden administration.
“When the network of Walter Cronkite seizes your reporting files, including confidential source information, that is an attack on investigative journalism,” Herridge said, according to The Daily Caller.
“I just want to be clear, congressman. Wherever you work, if this happened to you, it’s an attack on free press. It’s an attack on the First Amendment. It makes it more challenging for reporters to work in the future. That disrupts the free flow of information to the public,” she continued. “They call journalism a profession for a reason, because it’s about an informed electorate, and it’s a cornerstone for our democracy. I can only speak for myself. When my records were seized, I felt it was a journalistic rape.”
Mary Cavellaro, the chief news and broadcast officer of SAG-AFTRA, told the committee that she could not think of another time in which a news organization confiscated a former employee’s files.
“That should scare us too,” Jordan said. “The first time it ever happened and it happens to an award-winning journalist who’s been in this profession for a number of years, known all across the profession, and that happens on the heels of what happened to Ms. Atkinson because both journalists were critical of the government. That’s exactly what the — that’s what journalism’s about, being critical of the government when the government’s doing things wrong and then to have a major news organization or the government itself do this.”
This is not the only time that Herridge has come under fire for her investigations. A judge has ordered her to disclose the sources utilized in a sequence of articles concerning a Chinese American scientist who underwent FBI investigation but was never accused of any misconduct.
Herridge may incur fines of up to $800 per day should she decline to participate in an oath-bound interview for the case.
She has so far refused, citing the First Amendment.
