The Democratic Party faces a grim warning from former President Bill Clinton adviser Doug Schoen, who cautioned Thursday that it risks becoming a “permanent minority party” if it fails to address the lessons of the 2024 election. Schoen’s comments, made during an appearance on The Faulkner Focus, come in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s sweeping victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, which also saw Republicans strengthen their grip on Congress.
Trump secured 312 electoral votes and nearly 77 million votes nationwide, according to the Cook Political Report. His win was driven by key gains among Hispanic men, rural voters, and working-class Americans, demographics that traditionally leaned Democratic. Republicans also reclaimed the Senate and retained control of the House, cementing their dominance across all branches of government.
The Daily Caller reported that Schoen appeared to be in full panic mode.
“My party is out of touch. We’re an elite party. We believe that rock stars and political elites decide. What Trump did was connect with ordinary people on issues they care about,” Schoen said. “Inflation, cost of living, the border. Real issues that people care about. That’s the issue.”
Host Harris Faulkner asked Schoen if he is “worried about” the Democratic party.
“Yes. I’m worried that we will be a permanent minority party unless we learn from this election,” Schoen answered. “And so far, no learning has been done.”
“Wow. That is tough. And you’ve been around a long time and watched a lot of change,” Faulkner responded.
In September, Schoen said that he was “uncommitted” on whether or not he would pull the lever for Kamala Harris, citing the rise of antisemitism on the left.
“At this point, I cannot,” Schoen said when questioned about whether or not he would vote for Harris on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus. “I would call myself undecided at this point, but I can’t vote for her for reasons related to her change in position and also the Middle East as we have talked about before. I do not believe she is sufficiently committed to Israel and fighting antisemitism.”
Democrats have so far seem flummoxed by what happened on Election Day and nothing has caused more anxiety on the left than what happened in the Lonestar State.
The Texas Tribune explained: “Texas Democrats have long viewed the state’s growing Latino population as their ticket to eventually breaking through the Republican Party’s dominance. [Election night], however, showed that the GOP has made significant gains in peeling away those voters, and nowhere was that more apparent than along the border.
After years of losing the statewide Latino vote by double digits, Republicans set a high-water mark with Donald Trump capturing 55% of the critical voting bloc, besting Vice President Kamala Harris’ 44% share, according to exit polls.
In the traditionally Democratic strongholds along the border, Trump managed a near sweep.
He won 14 out of the 18 counties within 20 miles of the border, a number that doubled his attention-grabbing 2020 performance in the Latino-majority region. He carried all four counties in the Rio Grande Valley just eight years after drawing a mere 29% in the region — a feat that included delivering 97% Latino Starr County to Republicans for the first time since 1896. And, though he lost El Paso, one of the border’s most populous counties, he narrowed margins there in ways not seen in decades.”
Democrats appear to be standing at a fork in the road. Will they choose celebrities and sanctuary cities or follow Schoen’s path?
