In an incredible moment of projection, during a recent podcast, the congresswoman from New York recently said that she believes she will be thrown in jail if Trump returns to the White House in 2025, writes The New York Post
Ocasio-Cortez spoke with podcast host Kara Swisher for her show, “On with Kara Swisher,” which published the interview Thursday.
They touched on the power of technology corporations — including Ocasio-Cortez’s “tangle” with Amazon and tech moguls’ conservative fundraising — Israel, artificial intelligence and the upcoming presidential election.
“I mean, it sounds nuts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy threw me in jail,” she said. “He’s out of his mind. I mean, he did his whole first campaign around ‘lock her up.’ This is his motto.”
Ocasio-Cortez said she takes Trump “at his word.”
“I take him at his word when he says that he’s going to round up people. I take him at his word when he threatens journalists. I take him at his word,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I feel like what we saw in his first presidency was an amuse-bouche to what his intentions are. He has learned from his mistakes of appointing professionals, and he will not make that mistake next time.”
Trump was found guilty in a controversial trial in which the judge told the jury that they did not have to agree on the crime that Trump committed, which could ultimately lead to a mistrial. Since the verdict, Democrats have become committed to three things: that Trump should still be gagged from talking about the trial in order to help Biden at the debate, saying that Trump is a “felon,” arguing that the former president is running solely on “getting revenge.”
The Daily Mail explained that “AOC’s concern stems from Trump’s response to a question earlier this month when he was asked during a Fox & Friends interview if ‘revenge’ will be his ‘success.’
‘These are bad people. These people are sick, and they do things that are so destructive… If it weren’t me, they’d be going after somebody else, and I know a lot of the competition,’ Trump said. ‘They wouldn’t do so well.’
But more recently Trump attempted to allay fears that he would seek retribution while suggesting he would still have every right to do so.
‘Number one, they’re wrong,’ Trump said to Sean Hannity. ‘It has to stop, because otherwise, we’re not going to have a country.
‘Look, when this election is over, based on what they’ve done, I would have every right to go after them, and it’s easy, because it’s Joe Biden and you see all the criminality, all of the money that’s going into the family and him, all of this money from China, from Russia, from Ukraine.”
He hasn’t actually claimed he plans to do so, though. In 2016, Trump famously led chants of “lock her up,” referring to Hillary Clinton. Once he became president, however, the former president believed that prosecuting Clinton for her crimes would be a distraction and terrible for the country.
Weeks after Election Day in 2016, The New York Times reported, “Mr. Trump, who branded his rival “Crooked Hillary” and said she would go to jail if he were president, said in an interview with reporters and editors at The New York Times that he was no longer interested in pursuing Mrs. Clinton, in part because he wanted to heal the wounds of a divisive campaign.
“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t,” Mr. Trump said during the interview. “She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways, and I am not looking to hurt them at all. The campaign was vicious.”
Mr. Trump said he wanted to ‘move forward’ from the subject. Without elaborating, he said that “we’ll have people that do things,” perhaps a reference to the F.B.I. or Republicans who might continue to press for prosecutions in the email or foundation cases. But the president-elect made clear that he would not seek to pursue an investigation himself nor make it a priority after he assumes office.”
