By Gavin Newsom recently visited China, hoping to strengthen his credentials to run for president if Joe Biden drops out. Politico writes, “Newsom’s trip was billed primarily as an opportunity to advance international cooperation on climate change. But as he met with Xi and other high ranking Chinese officials, it was also an opportunity for the Democrat to burnish his presidential bonafides, as well as California’s place as a leader on the global stage. The governor dances around his presidential ambitions, but the carefully curated images on this trip were as clear a sign as any that he’s eyeing a run at the White House in ‘28. In China, he was photographed in plenty of dry meetings, including the one with Xi, looking the picture of a statesman.”
The takeaway from the trip, however, was that Newsom shouldn’t get near the White House. Upon returning to American soil, the California governor revealed that he took away all of the wrong things from the trip.
After a trip to China, which uses a social credit score system, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the next phase of the state’s “Cradle to Career” system that uses more than one billion data points.
“By leveraging billions of data points, California’s Cradle-to-Career data system will be a game-changer for improving the quality of life for millions of Californians and highlighting ways to improve opportunity in the classroom and access to the workforce,” according to The Center Square.
The system is designed to “illuminate gaps and identify opportunities throughout students’ education experiences so they can ultimately reach their goals for life and careers” through data that includes “race, gender, ability, and geography to illuminate and address areas of strength and needed growth, and any inequities.”
“This milestone represents a significant step forward in our mission to establish a robust, comprehensive data system that provides a nuanced understanding of Californians’ educational and professional journeys,” said Mary Ann Bates, Executive Director of the California Cradle-to-Career Data System. “I want to thank our data partners for their unwavering commitment to ensuring that Californians will have validated, reliable data available to inform decisions. This collective effort will equip our state with the data and tools necessary to ensure that every Californian has the opportunity to succeed.”

While Newsom believed that his trip would make him look like a potential leader of the free world, the reaction showed that visiting China made him look more like a coward afraid to stand up for fundamental human rights and liberties.
Newsweek slammed the governor for whitewashing communist China’s human rights abuses. The Chinese government has imprisoned over a million of the Uyghur people since 2017, subjecting those not detained to intense surveillance, religious restrictions, slave labor, and forced sterilizations.
“Newsom’s trip, which comes as relations between the U.S. and China continue to deteriorate, has sparked criticism and concern by human rights activists who think the governor is choosing to ignore the severe abuses reportedly going on in China.
Before Newsom even left California, a group of 60 advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations released a joint statement Friday describing the governor’s trip as a move to “explicitly turn away from engaging on critical human rights issues.”
Answering a reporter’s question about why Newsom didn’t bring up the issue with Xi, the governor responded: “I can’t be everything to everybody at every moment of every minute of every day. But I was very privileged to have the opportunity to dialogue with some of the most influential leaders in China about those [issues] in very direct and honest ways.”
In a previous comment to Newsweek, Human Rights Watch acting China Director Maya Wang said that by framing climate and human rights as a trade-off, the governor was abetting the Chinese government’s efforts to marginalize human rights.”
During a speech in January, Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “In our finest hours, California has always been freedom’s force multiplier, protecting liberty from a rising tide of oppression taking root in statehouses, weaknesses masquerading as strength, small men in big offices.”
California is the true freedom state.

When standing next to Xi and his totalitarian regime, Newsom showed who the small man in a big office really was.
