Hunter Biden has received his slap on the wrist, according to new reports. The president’s son will plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors and was allowed to strike a deal with federal prosecutors as it relates to his felony gun charge.
The plea deal will likely serve as a great example of how nice it is to know people in high places.
The charges were detailed in a criminal filing in US District Court in Delaware, where the US Attorney David Weiss, a Donald Trump appointee, has been conducting the investigation that at one time explored allegations of money laundering, foreign lobbying and other potential charges.
Hunter Biden’s attorney said in a statement that the deal with federal prosecutors will “resolve” the Justice Department’s long-running criminal probe into the president’s son.
“Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement,” said Christopher Clark. “A firearm charge, which will be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement and will not be the subject of the plea agreement, will also be filed by the Government. I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward,” writes CNN.
“The deal ends a long-running Justice Department investigation into Biden’s second son, who has acknowledged struggling with addiction following the 2015 death of his brother Beau Biden,” noted The AP. “It also averts a trial that would have generated days or weeks or distracting headlines for a White House that has strenuously sought to keep its distance from the Justice Department.
Christopher Clark, a lawyer for the younger Biden, said in a statement that it was his understanding that the five-year investigation had now been resolved.
‘I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life,’ Clark said. ‘He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.’
The news comes as congressional Republicans pursue their own investigations into nearly every facet of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, including examining foreign payments and other aspects of his finances. It also comes days after a 37-count indictment came down against former President Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents on his Florida estate, another case with even more dramatic political implications.
The gun charge states that Hunter Biden possessed a handgun, a Colt Cobra 38 special, despite knowing he was a drug user for 11 days in October 2018. The count carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, but the Justice Department says Hunter Biden has reached a pretrial agreement on that charge.”
The Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, had asked the DOJ to delay charges until his committee could complete their investigation into the Biden family’s influence peddling. He recently claimed that the FBI holds a document detailing how Joe Biden, along with Hunter, received millions of dollars from a Ukrainian oligarch during the final months of Joe Biden’s vice presidency.
Unsurprisingly, the Biden Department of Justice did not apparently take up the request. These new lenient charges may make it more difficult for future charges and investigations into Hunter and Joe’s shady dealings.
Allowing the president’s son to receive such a bargain is another good example of the main defining principle of this administration and their liberal allies. There are two sets of rules: one for Democrats, and one for everyone else.
